The hepatoprotective activity of ozonated olive oil

Liver is a multipurpose organ of the body that controls internal chemical environment. It handles the metabolism and excretion of drugs and other xenobiotics from the body thereby providing protection against foreign substances by detoxifying and eliminating them  Liver purifies enthetic chemical molecules through oxidation, reduction and/or conjugation. It is certainly affected by free radical and causes disease hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver cancer and other alcohol related disorders. Liver disease is the major causes of serious health problem leading to morbidity and mortality worldwide and the problem has increased in search for hepatotherapeutic agents from plants.Liver injury or dysfunction is well known as a serious health problem and can be produced by toxic chemicals, drugs, and virus infiltration from ingestion or infection. Exposure of diverse environment pollutants and xenobiotics such as alcohol, paracetamol, carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), thioacetamide are the major cause of liver disorder, which damage the liver by producing reactive oxygen species which are extremely toxic and produce injury in the tissue through covalent bond and oxidation in DNA base, lipid and protein, also can change the functional activity of enzymes and structural proteins.

Gorinstein et al. stated that ozonated olive oils improve lipid metabolism and increase antioxidant potential in rats fed diets containing cholesterol. Administration of ozonated olive oil may have a potential role as:

  • an antioxidant and in lowering the risk of malignant neoplasms, especially breast and stomach cancer; and also in ovary, colon and endometrium cancer
  •  the popularity of ozonated olive oil is increasing mostly attributed to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, which may help in preventing diseases in humans.
The treatment of fatty liver disease consists of diet, exercise and administration of various drugs (ursodeoxycholic acid, vitamin E, pentoxyfilline, etc.).
In relation to diet, it has been proven that ozonated olive oil can have a beneficial effect. Several studies conclude that its intake can significantly reduce the deposit of fat in the liver. In a recent study, ozonated olive oil was administered in the diet to 32 patients with fatty liver for 12 weeks and compared with 34 others who took sunflower oil. In those patients in whom their diet included ozonated olive oil, it was found a higher decrease in liver fat and in the percentage of body fat than in those who received sunflower oil. Other studies have shown a similar effect when comparing ozonated olive oil with other types of oil (such as soy and safflower oil).

On the other hand, another study included 43 patients with fatty liver disease divided into two groups and who followed a hypocaloric diet with or without extra-fine ozonated olive oil (3 tablespoons daily of oil along with the diet). In patients who took olive oil there was a significant decrease in transaminases and weight (mean of 3.45 kg) compared to controls.

In addition, it has been shown that ozonated olive oil can have indirect beneficial effects on the vascular system (arteries, etc.) since it lowers the levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) without affecting those of good (HDL).

Ozone Therapy for Hepatitis B and C

Hepatitis B is caused by the hepatitis B virus. It is a non-communicable, liver infecting disease which is classified into acute or chronic, depending on the severity of the symptoms. Though it is non-communicable through direct contact such as sneezing, coughing, it is infectious as the viral infection may be transmitted through contact with body fluids or blood of an infected person. According to latest WHO estimates, 240 million people are chronically infected with hepatitis B.

Hepatitis C, too is an infectious disease which affects the liver. It is caused by the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and if untreated, can lead to more severe conditions such as scarring of the liver, cirrhosis or liver cancer, which may potentially require a liver transplant if other treatment procedures fail.

Ozone therapy is an effective alternative treatment for patients with acute or chronic form of hepatitis B/C. Various studies have shown that the therapy has a direct lethal effect on both the hepatitis B and C viruses because medical ozone has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties in aqueous media. It works by inactivating the virus and thus relieving the patient of his/her illness. Ozone diffused into blood kills the harmful virus, leaving the healthy cells unharmed. Healthy cells remain unaffected because of their ability to produce antioxidants which make them impervious to ozone.

For patients with chronic conditions of hepatitis B/C, bimodal treatment is especially effective – basic treatment supported with ozone therapy not only decreases the time taken to cure, but also protects from hepatorenal syndrome andrenal damage by significantly increasing renal blood flow and by decreasing plasma renin activity.
